Jeg Coughlin III
The Coughlin family has earned plenty of championships in motorsports, and now third-generation Jeg Coughlin III is adding to that winning legacy by capturing the 2013 Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III Golf Championship.
"Jeggie," as family and friends know him, does enjoy traveling to the races to watch his six-time drag racing champion father Jeg Coughlin Jr. zip down the quarter-mile. But he's more at home on a golf course, as his State high school course record of 144 during two days on the Scarlet course at the Ohio State University Golf Club proved.
"Everything worked out great for me at State," Jeggie said. "It was very cool to win that title because Jack Nicklaus won the same thing back in the day, and any time you can do something he did you feel special.
"I'm glad to have a chance to defend it in 2014. That doesn't happen very often, so it'll be a big challenge."
The 16-year-old junior at Village Academy in Powell, Ohio, gave racing a try when he was younger, making passes in a Jr. Dragster and darting around his family's property in a go-kart. But he realized in his preteen years that he prefers the solitary test of golfing.
Up next, Jeggie hopes to become an All-American at the high school level, while continuing to hone his game in anticipation of playing collegiately in 2015.
