Welcome to Team JEGS, NHRA Drag Racing

Mike Coughlin

A classic overachiever, Mike Coughlin put together one of the best seasons of his long drag racing career in 2007, winning three events and the North Central Division Top Sportsman championship. Driving his JEGS Mail Order Chevy Cobalt, Coughlin won early and won often, spending most of the season in first place and finishing the year with the largest points total of any competitor in the NHRA North Central Division, regardless of class.

Of course, winning is nothing new to Coughlin, who along with his brothers John, Troy, and Jeg Jr., have combined to win more than 100 major drag racing events in the two decades. With his inaugural win at the 1999 Mopar Parts Nationals in Englishtown, N.J., Mike completed the Coughlin family “superfecta” becoming the fourth family member to win an NHRA national event title when he drove to the Pro Stock Truck victory. Later that season, he won NHRA’s oldest and most prestigious event, the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. Racing in the short-lived Pro St
ock Truck category, Mike was one of the few competitors to qualify for every event.

In 2001, Mike went to three final rounds, finished sixth in the points standings, and established performance records for elapsed time and speed by driving his JEGS Mail Order Chevy S-10 to a 7.397-second run at 182.65 mph in Joliet, Ill. He capped the season by winning the last-ever Pro Stock Truck event at the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif.

Returning to his sportsman racing roots in 2002, Coughlin didn’t skip a beat as he finished tenth in the national points standings and followed with an 11th place finish in 2003, winning four North Central Division Lucas Oil Series events and the NHRA national event in Columbus during that two-year span.

Following a winless 2004 season, Mike returned to form in 2005 winning the Super Comp title at the prestigious JEGS.com Cajun SPORTSnationals in Belle Rose, La., and reaching the final round of the Pontiac Performance Nationals at the Team JEGS home track, National Trail Raceway. Mike also won the Lucas Oil Series event at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., and finished the season as the nation’s 11th ranked Super Comp racer.
Seeking to fulfill his need for speed, Mike commissioned chassis builder Jerry Bickel to build a 6-second, 200-mph Chevy Cobalt for the exciting new Top Sportsman class in 2006. After winning the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals and posting several other late-round finishes, Mike fulfilled a longtime goal when he clinched the 2007 NHRA North Central Division Top Sportsman title.
Mike and his wife, Kriss, reside in Delaware, Ohio with their sons, Jack, and Clay, and their two boxers.
