NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series
NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series
JEG’S Northern SPORTSnationals
National Trail Raceway
Columbus, Ohio
July 29-31
With a little help from his friends, five-time NHRA sportsman world champion Scotty Richardson will be able to continue his pursuit of the Jeg’s Crown trophy at the upcoming Jeg’s NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals in Columbus, Ohio July 28-31. The beautiful handcrafted Jeg’s Crown trophy will be presented to any driver who can win both NHRA SPORTSnationals titles in the same class in 2005.
Richardson became eligible for the Jeg’s Crown after winning the Super Gas title at the Jegs.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals in Belle Rose, La., last April. However, the Chevy Cavalier he drove to victory in Belle Rose was recently sold, leaving him without a ride for the upcoming Columbus event. Enter Jeg’s Mail Order owners Troy, John, Mike and Jeg Coughlin, who graciously offered to let Richardson race the family’s ’63 Corvette roadster during the inaugural event.
“Obviously I want to race in Super Gas at the [Jeg’s NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals] because having a chance to win the Jeg’s Crown is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it is very important to me,” said Richardson. “When the Coughlin brothers heard that I might not have a car to race in Super Gas, they didn’t hesitate to offer one of theirs. That just goes to show you what a great bunch of people they are. They not only sponsor two great [SPORTSnationals] events and put up a great prize like the Jeg’s Crown, but they’re also willing to go out of their way to help a racer like myself. Now, I can’t imagine anything better than winning the Jeg’s Crown behind the wheel of a Jeg’s car.”
Richardson, who was named one of NHRA’s Top 50 drivers in a 2001 survey, will be driving a proven winner in Columbus. The Jeg’s Mail Order ’63 Corvette roadster was most recently driven by current Pro Mod driver Troy Coughlin.
In addition to Richardson, Mike Ashley (Pro Mod), Michael Johnson (Comp Eliminator), Hugh Meeks III (Super Stock), Jeff Strickland (Stock), Mike Coughlin (Super Comp), and Sid Norwood (Super Street) are also in the running for the Jeg’s Crown.
