Both Coughlin’s sitting pretty in Englishtown

Friday Qualifying Summary

Pro Stock driver Jeg Coughlin continues to enjoy his relationship with venerable Old Bridge Township Raceway Park as the three-time Englishtown winner zoomed to the No. 13 position Friday. Coughlin opened with a 6.750-second run at 204.23 mph and then improved to a 6.744 at 204.66 mph in the evening to earn a position in the field of the 36th annual K&N Filters Supernationals.

“There’s room for more,” Coughlin said. “The second session got progressively quicker as it went along because the sun was setting just as we were making our runs. The guys in the very back of the pack were able to fly, including my teammate Richie Stevens. He has the same tune-up as we do so it’s always encouraging when he does well. Now we can utilize the team concept and learn from his run as well as ours.”

Coughlin won this event in 1998 and 2000, the same year he won his first of two Pro Stock world titles. He also collected a trophy here in 1999 during the $50,000 King Demon Crown special event for the sport’s top eight qualifiers.

“I love the track,” Coughlin said. “It’s always been a place that agrees with our tune-up for whatever reason. It is a little bumpy this year and now that the event has started there’s not much they can do other than spray a bunch of traction compound down. The guy or girl who wins this race is the one that gets their car to stick to the track the best.”

Coughlin will have two chances to improve his spot in the field at 11 a.m. and 2;30 p.m.

Troy Coughlin is comfortably in the field of the AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge after two of three qualifying runs. The driver of the Jeg’s Mail Order Ford Mustang ran a best of 6.197 seconds at 228.00 mph, which earned him the No. 7 position overall.

“We’re in the top half of the field,” Troy said. “We probably could be another spot or two higher but we had a slight mechanical problem that started during the burnout and didn’t correct itself until I was in high gear. Otherwise we would have run a 6.15 of 6.16.

“We’re still very happy with where we are. We’ll have one more qualifying run in the morning and then we’ll get ready to win our opening round race Saturday night. We feel confident that this Jeg’s Mail Order car can win rounds and contend for the trophy. Everything we accomplished today just backs that thought up.”

The final qualifying session for Pro Mod begins at 2 p.m. Sudden-death eliminations start at 4:30 p.m.
