“What a great weekend!” Coughlin said. “My car was really fast and we managed to stay out of trouble during the race and win it all. To win a race that JEGS Mail Order sponsors is like winning the Daytona 500 for us.
“The Heavy Modified cars are a little faster than the Heavy Honda cars I used to drive. They would probably go 50 mph if we could totally open them up. I know they sure are fun to drive. This was so much fun.”
Coughlin is the son of JEGS co-owner John Coughlin and grandson of JEGS founder Jeg Coughlin Sr. This was his third win under USAC sanction.
“Qualifying was completely rained out so we went straight into the Main Feature,” Cody said. “We were turning 6.2-second laps, which felt pretty fast, but a 40-lap race still has a lot going on. I guess this was about the best start I could have had in Heavy Mod.
“A special thanks to my crew chief Tom McCauley as well as Don Fleming. They gave me an awesome car.”
Cody has no time to rest as he and his cousins Jack and Paige will compete in Junior Dragsters at this weekend’s JEGS Northern SPORTSNationals at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio.
“I’m really looking forward to racing with Jack,” Cody said of the 8-year-old son of Mike Coughlin. “He’s my little buddy and we’re going to have some fun. Paige, uncle Troy’s daughter will also be racing, so there will be plenty of us third generation racers behind the wheel this weekend. We all can’t wait!”
