DELAWARE, Ohio – Following his $5,000 victory at a recent E.T. Bracket event in Farmington, N.C., John Coughlin’s confidence is at an all time high as he prepares for the upcoming Pontiac Performance Nationals at National Trail Raceway. Coughlin hopes that his recent success in bracket racing is a positive sign as he attempts to win his home event for the third time since 1993. Coughlin will be racing his Jeg’s Mail Order Cavalier in the Super Stock class.

“We tested the car here in Columbus last week and it ran really well,” said Coughlin. “I made a few changes to the car and I made a few adjustments to my driving style and everything seemed to come together. I’ve only raced twice this year so it was great to have a chance to make some extra runs. The last time I raced in Super Stock I red-lighted by a thousandth of a second in the first round so I’ll definitely be looking to make up for that this weekend.”

In an effort to make his car more consistent, Coughlin recently enlisted the services of reigning NHRA Comp champ Jeff Taylor, who formerly worked as a crew chief for the Jeg’s Pro Stock team.

“No matter how much you think you know, someone like Jeff will always teach you something new,” said Coughlin. “He had a few things he wanted to try with my car and I could tell the difference immediately. During our test session I was able to make several very good runs and my reaction times were right were I wanted them to be. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that I’ve never felt more confident heading into a race.”

Coughlin had planned to race in Super Comp as well with his Jeg’s Mail Order dragster but has decided to let current Pro Stock ace Dave Connolly drive that car. Over the last few years, Coughlin has an admirable track record as a team owner. Former Super Stock World Champion Anthony Bertozzi won the 2003 NHRA Finals in Pomona behind the wheel of Coughlin’s Super Stock car and John also supplied the Jeg’s Mail Order dragster that carried Brad Plourd to a win at the 2005 Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.
