ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 22) — The cool climes of Old Bridge Township Raceway Park helped Jeg Coughlin Jr. zip to the number three position on the provisional ladder of the 38th annual ProCare RX NHRA Nationals Friday. Coughlin posted a quick 6.612 at 209.46 mph in a windy second session to secure his spot for his JEGS.com race team.

“When the weather is agreeable, this Old Bridge racetrack can be great,” said Coughlin, who turns 37 Saturday. “From what I hear, it’s been real hot here for the last few weeks so I think we got lucky and got a bit of a break with these real pleasant conditions and obviously our Chevy Cobalt liked it and we were able to make a great run.

“We started off with a 6.67, which wasn’t our best effort, but we were able to learn from that run and make the necessary adjustments for tonight. We all know how important it is to rise to the occasion in the Friday night session and the boys had the car ready. It’s a good thing because I heard the PA and I knew we’d been bumped out of the field by the time we got up there so the pressure was on a little bit.”

A winner at the last stop on the POWERade tour two weeks ago in Chicago, Coughlin and his Victor Cagnazzi Racing crew will now work on a set-up for Sunday’s eliminations.

“We’re always tweaking but the car is pretty much like it was in Chicago and it’s still running so strong,” Coughlin said. “I don’t expect anyone to improve tomorrow in the sunshine but some times you get a gust of cold air or some clouds in here and things get shaken up. We’ll be ready for any occasion.

“We’re super happy to be running well with our friends from Cisco Systems and Blue Water Communications in attendance. We’ve got a big group here supporting us and that always make it special. They’ve just come on board recently so it’s good to see them getting excited about drag racing. It’s always fun to introduce new fans to the sport.”

Saturday’s Pro Stock sessions begin at noon and 2:30 p.m.

In Pro Mod, Troy Coughlin is 13th overall with a 6.476 at 227.09 mph in his JEGS.com Pontiac GTO. Like his brother Jeg, he has more chances to qualify Saturday, where he’s hoping to improve.
