VALDOSTA, Ga. – After completing a successful test session at their home track in Columbus, brothers John and Mike Coughlin will head to South Georgia Motorsports Park this weekend for the completion of the NHRA Division 2 Lucas Oil Series event. The race was originally scheduled for April 13-15, but had to be postponed due to high winds. Before the action was halted,, John was qualified second in Super Stock and was the No. 15 qualifier in the Top Dragster class with his new Undercover Chassis dragster. Mike was seeded fifth in the Top Sportsman class after a 6.91 effort in his Chevy Cobalt. Now, both Coughlin brothers are eager to return to the popular facility to finish what they started nearly a month ago.

“We’ve run into a lot of bad weather early this season and haven’t gotten to race as much as we’d like to so Mike and I went testing early this week,” said John. “We were really encouraged by the results. I have two new race cars this year and Mike’s car is almost new and we were able to learn a lot. We’re anxious to get back to Georgia and finish what we started last month.”

John Coughlin is currently leading the battle for the Division 3 Top Dragster championship following his victory earlier this season in Orlando, Fla. He has also posted a pair of late round finishes in his 2007 Super Stock Cobalt, which was built by B&B Race Cars.

Mike Coughlin made his 2007 debut three weeks ago at the Jegs.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals, where he posted a semifinal finish with his Chevy Cobalt, which is now capable of 200-mph performances.

“We decided to try a new engine program this year and so far, it’s working,” said Mike. “Top Sportsman is getting more and more competitive and in order to stay ahead, we felt we needed to run faster and qualify higher. I should be able to run in the sixes at every race this year and that should get me a spot in the top half of the field, which is exactly what we’re looking for.”

The South Georgia Motorsports Park event will feature time trial runs on Friday, May 11, with final eliminations set to begin at 9 a.m., on Sunday, May 12.
