Cody Coughlin has a busy weekend ahead of him in Michigan this weekend. Coughlin will run two races on Saturday afternoon. First he’ll run the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series 200-mile race at Michigan International Speedway. After that is complete, Coughlin will hustle to Flat Rock Speedway, a little over an hour away, to compete in the ARCA/CRA Super Series 125 on Saturday night.
Coughlin has four races left as he pursues the ARCA/CRA Super Series championship. He heads into Saturday night’s race at Flat Rock with a 13-point lead in the series standings.
“We got very fortunate with the scheduling for this weekend,” Coughlin said. “Two races in one day will be tough, but I’m glad that I can still pursue this championship and be able to continue to learn on the Truck Series side of things as well.”
The toughest thing for Coughlin on Saturday won’t be the overload of racing, or even the difference in vehicles. It will be the drastic difference in race tracks.
In the first part of the day, Coughlin will be nearing 185 mph on the two-mile oval of Michigan International Speedway. The track Coughlin will race on at night couldn’t be any more different from MIS. Flat Rock Speedway is a tight quarter-mile bullring.
“The adjustment will be a little bit tough,” said the 20 year-old. “I know that I’ll be missing practice at Flat Rock, but hopefully we’ll make it there before qualifying so I can at least have two laps on track to adjust before we get started in the race.
“I’m very thankful that Jack is going to step in for me and make sure my car is as good as it can possibly be so we can challenge for another win,” said Coughlin, a Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver. “I’ve got two awesome crews this weekend that I’m very thankful for. I am so lucky to have car owners like Kyle and Samantha who give me great equipment on the Truck Series side, and I’m so thankful I have Jack, Kevin (Hamlin, team manager), Scott (Wimmer, spotter) and Dave (Holt, crew member) working on my Late Models.
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Careers for Veterans 200 at Michigan International Speedway begins at 1 p.m. ET.
Saturday’s action at Flat Rock Speedway will begin at 3 p.m. ET. Qualifying will take place after 5 p.m. with racing set to follow at approximately 7 p.m.
