SEATTLE (July 19) — Former Seattle winner Jeg Coughlin Jr. will begin his quest for a second Emerald City title from the No. 10 position on the elimination grid after an improved run of 6.606 at 208.36 mph during Saturday’s action at Pacific Raceways.

“I’d say it was a good day,” Coughlin said. “We’re not qualified exactly where we want to be but we’ve got a handle on the car now and we feel really strong heading into tomorrow. Our confidence is back up where we like it to be.”

Always one to compare his car’s performance to those of the others in any given session, Coughlin was pleased to see his JEGS.com Chevrolet Cobalt was the fifth quickest of Round 3 and fourth quickest of Round 4.

“That final run made us all feel pretty good because we were in the less desirable (right) lane but we still put up the fourth quickest run of the entire session,” Coughlin said. “That tells us we can run right there with anyone tomorrow. As usual, there will be a premium on the performance of the driver and the team will have to give their best to make sure the driver has the best racecar possible. It’s like that every week out here.”

Coughlin, who won this event in 2002, will open race day against Mike Edwards, who qualified seventh with a 6.596 at 209.17 mph. The two men have raced each other three times this year with Coughlin holding a 2-1 advantage in their head-to-head match-ups.

“Mike’s always a tough customer and he’s been a ball of fire the last couple of months,” Coughlin said. “He’s obviously making some good horsepower, but so are we so I’m confident we’ll have something for him.

“We did change motors before the final session because we wanted to try this new one out and we were pleased with the results. We still weren’t completely efficient in first 100 feet although it was our best short time of the weekend. There are lots of reasons to be excited about our chances.”
