It’s not very often that Jeg Coughlin Jr. can say he’s beating Tony Schumacher, Ron Capps, and Matt Smith. After all, Coughlin drives the world famous JEGS.com Chevrolet Cobalt Pro Stocker, while Schumacher pilots a Top Fuel dragster, Capps a nitro Funny Car, and Smith a Pro Stock Motorcycle.
But a quick look at the current Full Throttle championship points shows Coughlin clear of all challengers at the one-quarter mark of the 2009 season. With six of 24 races in the books, Coughlin’s two victories, two runner-up finishes, and 16-4 race day mark have earned him 524 points. Schumacher leads Top Fuel with 487 points, Capps fronts Funny Car with 464 points, and Smith tops Pro Stock Motorcycle with 270 points. (The Motorcycles have run only three events.)
The yeoman work by Coughlin and crew hasn’t gone unnoticed. He was one of the finalists for the first quarter Driver of the Year award, which is decided by a select panel of motorsports writers and editors.
