ST. LOUIS (May 5) – Despite losing two qualifying sessions to rain, Jeg Coughlin Jr. remains one of the most consistently fast Pro Stock drivers on the NHRA tour. Coughlin’s Slammer’s Ultimate Milk Cobalt carried him down Gateway International Raceway in 6.7032 seconds at 206.61 mph, the fourth best E.T. of the day.

“We were on an abbreviated schedule this week with the rain, which makes it much more crucial for the crew to get honed in on the track and weather conditions,” the 36-year-old Coughlin said. “Even more concerning is the new starting line concrete they have here. There was a lot of obstacles for everyone to overcome.

“It was a big challenge but our guys did a great job of getting our cars prepared for action. Dave (Connolly, teammate) and I were 3-4 in the first session and he was quickest in Q2 so that’s a real good indicator that we’ll be ready for eliminations.”

As the No. 4 qualifier, Coughlin will open racing against No. 13 qualifier Mike Edwards, who qualified with a 6.737 at 205.04 mph.

“Mike’s a great competitor and he’s been at it a long, long time,” Coughlin said. “You know he’ll be ready to race and as close as Pro Stock is anyone can win so we’ll have to be up for the challenge.”

Coughlin, of Delaware, Ohio, is currently third in the POWERade points standings. He trails second-place Jason Line by less than one round of action.

Eliminations begin at 11 p.m. CDT. Same-day television coverage will be provided by ESPN2.
