Team JEG’S – Pro Stock
Jeg Coughlin, Jr
Friday Qualifying Summary
The first of two scheduled days of qualifying ended with the Jeg Coughlin, Jr. sitting in the No. 7 position. His best qualifying time after the first two sessions was a 6.819 at 202.88 mph. Coughlin will have two additional qualifying sessions tomorrow (Saturday) before the field is set for race day.
In the opening qualifying session the 45-time NHRA national event winner posted a run of 6.896 at 201.76 mph. The run was good enough to put him and his yellow and black Jeg’s Mail Order Chevy Cavalier in the No. 15 position.
“We launched from the starting line and the car spun pretty hard,” explained Coughlin. “I quickly put it (gear box) into second-gear to calm the tire speed down. It really tugged the engine down and hurt us on the big end.”
By the time Coughlin rolled into the water box for the second qualifying session he had already been bumped out. The two-time NHRA Pro Stock champion jumped up to the No. 7 position with a run of 6.819 at 202.88 mph.
“We are getting closer with each run we make down this new surface,” said Coughlin. “Now we have been down both lanes and can go into the final day of qualifying armed with solid data on each lane. We are headed in the right direction and need to continue our trend of improving with each run. The morning session tomorrow (Saturday) will give us the best conditions of the weekend. We will need to make a better run to be in the top-half of the ladder and have lane choice for race day.”
