Jeg Coughlin – Pro Stock
JEG’S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier
Saturday Qualifying Summary
No stranger to the NHRA record book, three-time world champion Jeg Coughlin will look to add another page Sunday when he attempts to win an unprecedented fourth race title at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Coughlin will begin a run at the ACDelco NHRA Nationals trophy out of the No. 6 qualifying position, which he secured during the third of four furious rounds of professional qualifying over the past two days.
Coughlin’s best run of the weekend showed a 6.808-second attempt at 202.15 mph on the top-end scoreboards. The quickest car in attendance topped out at 6.775 seconds.
“The air was just a little worse today and the conditions had slipped just a touch so for us to be one of the few cars to actually step up our performance was very encouraging,” Coughlin said. “The right lane isn’t quite as good as the left and we still managed to go 6.80, which was the second quickest pass in that lane. Greg Anderson, the guy we’re all being measured by this year, also ran 6.80 so we’re right there with him.
“The key was getting the car to go straight. That’s something we’ve been working on for a while now. We were just a shade from being aggressive and it was right about where we needed to be. We’re happy with our position.”
A winner here in 2000, 2001, and 2002, the Jeg’s Mail Order Chevrolet Cavalier driver will try to become the first professional to win four races at this new state-of-the-art complex in the northern outskirts of Las Vegas, which opened for business in 2000. Overall in his career, Coughlin has 45 national event wins, including 33 in Pro Stock.
Coughlin, a 34-year-old from Delaware, Ohio, will open against No. 11 qualifier Ron Krisher of Warren, Ohio. Krisher and Coughlin have raced twice this season with Coughlin a perfect 2-0 against his Buckeye State foe.
“Ron has been around drag racing for quite some time so we can’t let our guard down one bit,” Coughlin said. “I’ll need to have a good light, hit all the shift points just right, and go straight if I want to win. This class is so tight you have to race everyone like they’re the champion of the world.”
Elimination racing begins at 11 a.m. Sunday. As usual, Pro Stock will follow Top Fuel and Funny Car. All elimination action will be shown on ESPN2.
