Race Day Summary
The Jeg’s Mail Order Chevy Cavalier driven by Jeg Coughlin, Jr started race day from the No. 4 qualifying position. The two-time NHRA Pro Stock champion extended his active qualifying streak to 43 events, which continues to lead the class.
In the opening round Jeg Coughlin faced off against Kurt Johnson. Lane choice went to Coughlin and he took the preferred left lane at Atlanta Dragway.
Coughlin launched from the starting line and the Jeg’s machine made a hard move toward the wall. The 33-year old second generation driver forcefully drove the car back into the middle of the groove, but scrubbed off a lot of e.t. early in the run. The win light went to KJ by a margin of .0287 seconds at the strip. Coughlin ran a 6.852 at 202.06 mph.
“We expected to have a better performance on race day this weekend,” said Coughlin. “Both of our rigs are heading straight to Jerry Bickel’s (chassis builder) shop and we are planning on testing in St. Louis on Wednesday before heading to Route 66 Raceway. I believe we will have things sorted out and be ready for Chicago.”
ROUND-BY-ROUND:
Round #1: K. Johnson 6.842 at 202.30 mph, defeated J. Coughlin 6.852 at 202.06 mph.
