Jeg Coughlin Jr – Season Preview

DELAWARE, Ohio – For the first time in more than eight seasons, Jeg Coughlin Jr. will not be behind the wheel of a Pro Stock car at the season opener in Pomona, California. After a successful professional run that included 34 national event victories and two World Championships, Coughlin announced at the end of the 2005 season that he would not return to Don Schumacher Racing.

“I finished sixth in the points standings and won the last race of the year in Pomona, so I was able to achieve some of the goals I set for myself last year,” said Coughlin. “I’m not planning to race Pro Stock in 2006, but it’s definitely not a retirement. I’m just going to step aside for a while. It was a hard decision to make, and I’m not sure what the future holds. If for some reason I don’t get back in a Pro Stock car, I’m proud of what I was able to accomplish in the eight-plus years.”

Though his plans don’t include Pro Stock, Coughlin will not be idle in 2006. In fact, the upcoming season might be one of his busiest ever. For one, he plans to race his JEG’S Mail Order dragster at selected Super Comp and big money E.T. events. Racing the dragster will allow Coughlin to attend more races with his brothers, John, Troy and Mike, who are all avid sportsman racers.

Coughlin is also in the process of building a Chevy II station wagon for E.T. bracket competition. He has enlisted veteran bracket racer Kenny Underwood to help with the construction.

“We have been working all winter on this car and it’s coming along nicely,” said Coughlin. “We built the chassis here in our JEGSTER shop and assembled the rest of the car using parts from the 250+ page JEG’S Mail Order catalog. It shows what we can do in house. The paint and interior are the only things we’re going to outsource.

“Kenny and I built the small block Chevy engine for the car,” Coughlin continued. “I haven’t built an engine in a long time and it was actually quite a learning experience. When we’re finished, this should be a good consistent 10-second bracket car that can be raced without a lot of maintenance.”

“After eight years of professional racing almost every weekend, I just wanted to take a little different approach,” said Coughlin. “I definitely haven’t been idle this winter, and I’m getting a chance to do some things I enjoy, like spending time with the family and friends.”
