DINWIDDIE, Va. (Oct. 15) – Pro Stock star Jeg Coughlin was enthusiastic about his return to the professional ranks at this weekend’s inaugural Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals. Judging by his career-best performance and quarterfinal finish, it appears his ability to drive a racecar at the top level of the sport is undiminished.

“It was a good weekend,” said Coughlin, the 2000 champion at Virginia Motorsports Park. “Obviously, I would have liked to have gone a round or two further in eliminations but overall it’s hard to be too upset. Like I said, it was a good race for us.”

Coughlin’s 6.604 at 208.83 in qualifying — both personal bests — seeded him seventh in the quickest Pro Stock field in NHRA history. He then took out veteran Allen Johnson with a 6.632 at 208.78 mph in the opening round before losing to Jim Yates in the quarterfinals when his Slammers Ultimate Milk/Jegs.com Cobalt experienced severe tire shake just off the launch pad.

“We got a little too aggressive,” Coughlin said. “Jim got out of shape further down track and only ran a 7.68 so he was there for the taking. We just didn’t have the right set up. The good news is we got some more passes on the car and we’ll be that much further ahead when we get to Las Vegas in two weeks.

“It was a real treat to have Roy Warren of Bravo! Foods International out with us this weekend. I wish we could have shown him a winner’s circle celebration but it wasn’t meant to be. Maybe next time.

“I do want to thank Victor Cagnazzi (team owner) for all his hard work in adding my car to the team. Plus, his crew has been working double time to get us ready and they really deserve some recognition. This team is champion caliber.”
