Saturday Qualifying Summary
Jeg Coughlin entered the final day of qualifying needing to improve him qualifying position from the No. 15 spot. The 45-time NHRA national event winner should why you never bet against him. The Jeg’s Mail Order Chevy Cavalier ran 6.806 at 202.24 mph. Coughlin catapulted up to the No. 3 position.
“We knew as a group the situation we were in and what we needed to do,” explained Coughlin. “We looked through a ton of data and put our best foot forward. The Jeg’s Mail Order Chevy Cavalier responded and delivered.”
The final session gave the team the opportunity to get aggressive with the set up and see what the track would handle. The yellow and black Jeg’s machine posted a run of 6.860 at 202.61 mph and slipped one position to land in the No. 4 spot.
The 33-year old second generation driver continues to hold the longest active qualifying streak in NHRA’s most competitive professional class. Jeg Coughlin has now qualified for 43 straight events. The last race Jeg failed to qualifying at was in 2002 at the first of two races held annually at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL.
“Our mind set going into the final session was to prepare for race day,” stated Coughlin. “It was unfortunate that someone put us back one position, but our group is ready for race day.”
Jeg Coughlin will go head-to-head with Kurt Johnson. The Jeg’s Mail Order Chevy Cavalier will have lane choice in the opening round.
