Friday Qualifying Summary
Racing brothers Jeg and Troy Coughlin opened the sixth annual NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals Friday by successfully qualifying both of their Jeg’s Mail Order-sponsored racecars in the provisional fields. Jeg laid down a 6.854 at 201.58 mph in his Dodge Stratus R/T to earn the No. 4 position in Pro
Stock, while Troy carded partially aborted 6.902 at 158.19 mph to placing his Ford Mustang in the 14th slot.
Jeg’s evening run was impressive, especially after he gave up on his first-round attempt and coasted through with an off-pace and out-of-contention 7.50 at 143 mph. Showing confidence, Jeg and crew chief Bob Glidden rebounded nicely in the second session. Jeg’s top speed of 201.58 mph was the fastest in the class.
“That was obviously much better start to finish,” Jeg said. “Bob and the guys did a great job tuning this thing to the track and the conditions, especially after our first-round attempt. The key was they stayed aggressive with the tune-up even when we started that session much later than scheduled. It gets tricky right at sunset but they handled it.
“I’m happy to see us with top speed. That’s a real credit to the guys putting our motors together. Everyone is doing a great job and it’s showing on the racetrack. Now we’ll get ready for tomorrow and see if we can’t fine-tune a good race day combination.”
The last person in the 16-car field to run in the six-second range, Troy can take solace in the fact he’ll qualify for this event regardless of what happens in the final round of Pro Mod qualifying Saturday as there are only 16 cars on the property.
“We found something in the car that has probably been hurting us for awhile,” Troy said. “I think we are on target for a rebound and we are all looking forward to having a strong day tomorrow.”
Troy will open Pro Mod eliminations Saturday afternoon, while Jeg finishes qualifying with the final two Pro Stock sessions. Race titles will be decided Sunday.
