Saturday Qualifying Summary
The first day of qualifying for the NHRA Mopar Mile High Nationals was canceled due to persistent rain showers and gave team only two qualifying sessions to break into the quick-16.
Jeg Coughlin, Jr laid down a run of 7.244 at 191.00 mph in his yellow and black Jeg’s Mail Order Chevy Cavalier to start the weekend. He landed in the No. 14 position by the close of the session.
“We left a lot on the table down low and that really took the wind out of our sails,” said Coughlin. “It takes even longer for the car to recover racing at this altitude. “
Going into the final qualifying session, the two-time NHRA Pro Stock champion knew that he had to improve his qualifying time or he would likely be bumped out of the field. Once again, Coughlin step up to the plate and delivered under pressure. He laid down a run of 7.209 at 191.87 mph. The run was an improvement and he will start race day from the No. 11 position.
“We were last in our 60-foot time in the final session and the car just felt like it fell on its face,” explained Coughlin. “We are prepared going in to race day and are looking forward to having a solid day.”
Jeg Coughlin will face off against local favorite V. Gaines in the opening round of the NHRA Mopar Mile High Nationals. The match up will pit a Chevy against a Mopar in a classic battle of the brands.
