Race Day Summary
Jeg Coughlin qualified No. 4 for the NHRA O’Reilly Spring Nationals. The 33-year old second generation has now qualified for 41 straight events in NHRA’s most competitive professional class and continues to hold the longest active qualifying streak in the class.
In the opening round Jeg faced off against Bruce Allen. Lane choice went to Jeg who made a last minute lane change and took the right lane.
The advantage off of the starting line went to the two-time NHRA Pro Stock champion by .018 seconds (.036 to .054). Jeg continued to lead at each incremental point down the track to take the win light and advance to the second round. He posted an impressive run of 6.757 at 204.85 mph. The JEG’S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier was the third quickest car of the round and posted the highest speed.
“We are still working on getting this car to go straight off of the line,” said Jeg. “The guys have been working hard all weekend and the conditions in the first round really came to us. If this car goes straight for the first 60-feet it should really help down track.”
The second round put Jeg and Kurt Johnson head-to-head for the second straight race. Lane choice went to the yellow and black JEG’S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier, which took the right lane again.
Jeg was the first driver to let the clutch out by .010 seconds (.038 to .048) in this match up. The two Chevy Cavaliers looked like they were welded together in the first half of the track. However, the JEG’S horsepower kept Jeg inching ahead of Kurt Johnson to take the win light by .0184 seconds. Jeg posted a quicker run of 6.762 at 204.57 mph.
“The car launched and marched straight down the middle of the groove,” commented Jeg.
In the semifinal round Jeg squared off against Greg Anderson. Lane choice went to Anderson and Jeg rolled into the left lane. Greg left the starting line first by .012 seconds (.024 to .036). The JEG’S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier was on the aggressive side and was forced to shut off.
“We had a productive weekend and showed some signs of the strength of our program this weekend,” explained Jeg. “We moved up one spot in the NHRA POWERade championship, so we are headed in the right direction. Troy and I will be doing some testing next weekend at No Problem Raceway as part of the NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals. We are excited to be a part of this great event since sportsman racing is such a big part of what our family and business is all about.”
