Pre Race Release
Three-time series champion and two-time Englishtown victor Jeg Coughlin enters this weekend’s 36th annual K&N Filters Supernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park sky-high after his best showing of the year a few days ago in Chicago. Coughlin, a 33-time winner in the Pro Stock category, raced his Jeg’s Mail Order Dodge Stratus R/T to the finals at Route 66 Sunday, narrowly missing his 46th career NHRA win by four inches.
“Momentum is on our side,” the 34-year-old said. “We had a very, very consistent racecar in Chicago. We made eight runs on the weekend and all of them were in between 6.78 and 6.81 seconds. We weren’t setting low elapsed time of the meet, but when a car is consistent like that, you can really make some moves.
“Once a tuner like Bob [Glidden, Team Jeg’s crew chief and 10-time world champion driver] gets the racecar going down the track every time then he starts to peck away at finding horsepower, and pecks away at chassis adjustments, and pecks away at the clutch package until he starts finding those hundredths and thousandths of a second that we need to be on par with the top cars. We’re so close.”
Coughlin is no stranger to Raceway Park’s winner’s circle, having taken wins here in 1998 and his championship year of 2000. He also logged a win at this track in the prestigious King Demon Crown special event before it was moved to Chicago.
“This is one of the tracks you grow up dreaming about,” Coughlin said. “To put your name on the list of Englishtown winners is surreal. This track and this race have the same heritage as the Gatornationals in Gainesville, or the U.S. Nationals in Indy, or the Finals in Pomona. It’s one of the famed, original races, and to me that carries weight.
“The other big thing that I think of when I think of this race is the fan base. They love Pro Stock up there and that makes it very exciting for all of us.”
