Jeg Coughlin – JEG’S Mail Order / Mopar – Dodge Stratus RT
Pre Race Release

Jeg Coughlin is one of the most accomplished young racers in drag racing. At 35, the native Ohioan has already won an astonishing 45 NHRA national event trophies and has three national championships to his credit. He’s proven to be a winner at both the professional and sportsman levels in a variety of different vehicles. The kid can race.

With such an impressive resume, it would seem Coughlin has little more to prove. At this point, any additional accomplishments would merely add to his legacy. But if any of his peers think he’s lost his fire to win, they’d be sadly mistaken.

Coughlin enters the 26th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway near Denver with a distinct goal in mind ‑ capturing his third trophy on Thunder Mountain. He already won here in 1998 and ’99, and was a runner-up in ’03.

After years racing with his family, Coughlin was lured to the sports largest professional team this past off-season by Don Schumacher. It was a big switch for Coughlin ‑ changing brands to a Dodge Stratus R/T and joining a Pro Stock wing of Don Schumacher Racing that was still being formed ‑ but one he accepted with gusto. Now, 12 races into his new job, Coughlin wants to add to his legacy.

“It’s time to win,” Coughlin said. “To get my first win in a Dodge at Mopar’s biggest race of the year would be special. It’s been awhile since I won on the Mountain and I’ve yet to score one with this team so the timing would be perfect.

“We have a great racecar. Richie [Stevens, teammate] and Bob [Glidden, crew chief] came here and tested last week and were very competitive in relation to the other cars. Bob even took a few runs and said he had a blast. We’ve seen teams get very aggressive at this track in recent years and we have plans to get after it ourselves this time around.”

Aside from Coughlin’s two wins in Denver, his tuner Bob Glidden has seven, far more than anyone else in the class. Coughlin hopes their combined experience will pay dividends this time through.

“It’s a tuner’s race up there,” Coughlin said. “It’s the only place we go where you’re running at altitude like this and these carbureted cars are gasping for breathe just like we are. It takes a savvy guy to figure out how to make up for the loss of horsepower and we have the savviest of them all in Bob Glidden.

“I’m anxious to score one for Don Schumacher, Bob, Mopar, and all the Jeg’s Mail Order race fans out there. Like I said, it’s time.”
