Kelly Coughlin is the youngest daughter of three-time Pro Mod champion Troy Coughlin and his wife Julie. Kelly loves horsepower just as much as anyone in the famed Coughlin family – but it’s a different kind of horsepower.
Kelly, who is slated to graduate from high school in 2019, has been drawn to show horses. Her and older sister Paige have shown horses across the country, and Kelly hopes to continue with that discipline.
Showing horses is as steeped in family tradition as drag racing. In fact, Kelly and her grandfather – JEGS High Performance founder Jeg Coughlin Sr. – designed the stable where she trains her championship-level horses.
Kelly has competed in the Children’s Hunter Jumper Small Pony division in AA-rated shows as far away as Florida and New York, and she qualified for the esteemed Pony Finals in Lexington, Ky., in 2015.
Just like drag racing, where the Coughlins do events as a family, showing horses is a family affair as well. Kelly’s sisters, brother and parents have all attended her competitions.
