Five-time world champion is no stranger to making history on the drag strip. To date, he remains the only racer in history to win national events in four different classes in the same season (1997) and he’s set records for most victories in a season and most elimination-round wins in single year, and is one a select few who have led the points from wire-to-wire to win a championship.

Still when Coughlin won the inaugural Mopar HEMI Shootout in 2004 when it was contested at the prestigious U.S. Nationals, even the 61-time national event winner needed some time to embrace his stunning accomplishment.

Sure Coughlin had a great racer, driving a HEMI-powered Plymouth Barracuda for West Coast Hemis legend Michael Ogburn, but until the race began, Coughlin had never driven the machine and the Shootout had brought out the best drivers from around the world.

The instantly recognizable Super Stockers are some of the most popular and revered muscle cars in this country’s history and the men and women who race them are all top-level professionals, but Coughlin still managed to survive and flourish in the specialty event and take home one of his most cherished Wally trophies ever.
