HEBRON, Ohio – Racing kicked off today for the 8th Annual NHRA JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio, with Strongsville, Ohio, racer Gary Wojnowski taking claim to the top spot in the Brodix/Steve Schmidt Top Sportsman class.
Wojnowski clocked in at over 200 mph in 6.827 seconds in his ’96 Cutlass followed by a pair of Ohio racers in Jeff Sexton, Fariborn, Ohio, and Andy Horne, Delaware, Ohio, in second and third. Sexton went 6.831 at 203.55 mph and Horne was 6.851, 201.49.
Alan O’Brien was quickest in the Spitzer Top Dragster category and Jason Coan went low in Comp Eliminator. O’Brien, Ronceverte, W.V., ran 6.152 seconds at 234.66 mph for the top speed of the event with Troy Stone and James Monroe in second and third. Coan, Kokomo, Ind., drove his ’32 roadster to a pass of 8.128 seconds for his No. 1 seed.
Ray Paquet and Jim Marshall lead the Super Stock and Stock fields respectively. Paquet went 1.083 seconds under the index at 8.817 seconds with his ’64 Fairlane in Super Stock and Marshall went 12.886, 1.164 under in his ’86 C-10.
Today’s event played host to nearly 1000 students who came out for the Lindsay Honda Acura / Napa Auto Parts Youth Career Day as the students learned about the various careers in motorsports and enjoyed at day at the races.
In addition to final qualifying for all classes, Saturday’s action will include a number of specialty ‘race within a race’ events highlighted by the JEGS Top Dragster Shootout and the Inaugural NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout. Racers have earned points throughout the year to qualify for these two events as eight drivers will face off in the JEGS Shootout while 16 will go to battle in the Moser Shootout. James Monroe and Rick Forish have qualified for both events and will face off in round 1 of each of the shootouts tomorrow.
Also being contested tomorrow are the DRAW/RFC Super Shootouts presented by Moser Engineering. Top seeds for the shootouts include Kendra Rienschield, Sunman, Ind., in Super Comp; Bill Jackson, Mansfield, Ohio, in Super Gas; and Don Garbinski, Philadelphia in Super Street. Not to be left out, racers in Stock and Super Stock will go heads up racing in class eliminations.
Gates open at National Trail Raceway at 7 a.m. on Saturday with racing set to begin at 8 a.m. The Super Shootouts are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. with the Moser and JEGS Shootouts set for 1 and 2 p.m. respectively.
