DENVER (July 15) – Jeg Coughlin Jr. lost a close race to Kenny Koretsky in the second round of Sunday’s 28th annual Mile-High NHRA Nationals but managed to keep the POWERade points lead in clear view as top-ranked racer Greg Anderson also lost in the quarterfinal round.
In fact, because Coughlin out-qualified Anderson by three spots, The JEGS.com race team actually gained two points on the lead and now trail by just 84 points.
“We’re not displeased,” Coughlin said. “We didn’t lose any ground to the points lead and we distanced ourselves a tad from third and fourth place. The team also won the Full Throttle Award for giving me the most consistent car in qualifying.
“We just missed the set-up through the first couple of gears against Kenny and he made a great pass. We would have needed a 7.08 or so to win and I don’t think the track could have held a number like that in this heat.”
Coughlin opened race day with a first-round win over Larry Morgan. Coughlin left first with a .026- to .049-second advantage and lead the entire way down the racetrack, winning with a 7.114 at 194.38 mph to Morgan’s 7.178 at 194.16 mph.
Against Koretsky, who was Coughlin’s final-round victim one week ago in Bristol, the JEGS.com Chevrolet Cobalt was simply beaten with Koretsky running a 7.124 at 194.04 mph to Coughlin’s 7.132 at 194.72 mph.
