MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Oct. 2) — Team JEGS short-track superstar Gary St. Amant has been the lead dog in the Hooters Pro Cup Series since the second race of the regular season, but an untimely accident with three laps left at the second stop of the five-race championship series dropped him to second overall after he limped through with a season-low 24th-place result.

Now the two-time world champion will play catch-up when the USAR tour arrives at Myrtle Beach Speedway in South Carolina for this Saturday night’s Mark Brooks Memorial Naturally Fresh 250. St. Amant finds himself 29 points behind fellow veteran racer Bobby Gill with just three races left before the 2007 title is decided.

“We picked a bad time to have our first accident of the year but I’m not going to let this one incident slow us down,” St. Amant said. “We’re very proud of the fact our JEGS.com/Speedco Chevy has completed every lap of every race and even though we got banged up a bit in Iowa, we still finished.

“We have a great car and a great team. Let’s face it; we’re down to the best of the best going all-out to win this deal. Bobby Gill is a great racer and he’ll fight to the end, for sure. But we’re not going away. We’ll be ready to go this weekend. We like the view from the top and we intend to get back up there.”

Prior to the Iowa race, St. Amant had carded seven top-five finishes in nine starts.

“We’ve raced safe,” St. Amant said, “because we’ve had a car that’s allowed us to be conservative. The key to these races most of the time is survival. We’ve been qualifying so well that we’re running up front for the most part and that’s allowed us to avoid most of the big pile-ups. Plus, the crew has been great when they come over the wall. We’ve had it all going our way so far.

“Iowa was a disappointment but the great teams, the championship-winning teams, overcome the hiccups and respond with big-time races. That’s what we need to do this weekend. We won’t go crazy because we don’t have to. We just want to run our race and do what’s gotten us this far.”

Qualifying for the Mark Brooks Memorial Naturally Fresh 250 begins at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The green flag drops at 7:30 p.m. just after an autograph session with the drivers and prerace ceremonies.
