Jeg Coughlin – Pro Stock
JEG’S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier
Race Day Summary

Pro Stock veteran Jeg Coughlin will have to wait at least three more months to collect another win at Pomona Raceway as he bowed out in the opening round of Sunday’s 40th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals to good friend Mike Edwards.

The four-time Pomona winner posted a respectable 6.756-second pass at 205.72 mph, which was just one thousandths of a second off his best attempt of the weekend, but was beat to the other end by Edwards’ 6.744 at 203.19 mph.

“We just got outrun, period,” Coughlin said. “I needed a .010 light at the Tree and instead I had a .041 to his .022 and that was all she wrote. I gave it up down low and we just never recovered. It’s not the way you want to end the year but you can’t judge the season by one race. Overall, we’re happy with our performance, especially of late.

“The end of the season is exciting because we all look forward to the break and spending more time with our family. We’re fired up about next year and getting out here to run for another championship. We finished sixth this year, which is respectable, but I think when you’ve won championships everything else pales in comparison.”

Coughlin could take some solace in the fact his car posted the quickest pass of Round 1 in the less desirable right-hand lane and the top speed of the entire session.

“We were fastest by a handsome amount and that was encouraging,” Coughlin said. “But the end result wasn’t what we wanted. We should have qualified better and had lane choice and we wouldn’t have had that problem.

“I’m happy with what we did this year. We won the Super Stock Hemi Challenge at Indy, which was a big highlight, and we reached a final round in our Jeg’s Mail Order Chevrolet Cavalier so it’s hard to complain. We just need to work harder this off-season and make a better run next year. That’s the plan.”
