Friday Qualifying Summary

A pair of solid opening-day passes has earned three-time Las Vegas winner Jeg Coughlin a top-half position in the provisional qualifying field of the fourth annual ACDelco NHRA Nationals. The former world champion will have two more chances to improve on his No. 8 ranking in Saturday’s final two qualifying sessions.

Coughlin started the day with a 6.844-second run at 202.27 mph in his Jeg’s Mail Order Chevrolet Cavalier, which is sporting a special Spy vs. Spy paint scheme for this event. His group then turned up the wick in the cooler evening round and Coughlin was able to improve to a quick 6.821 at 201.64 mph.

“We’re not overly fired-up at this point,” Coughlin said. “We kind of feel like we really haven’t put together what we would normally consider a good run yet with this ol’ Spy vs. Spy car. But we are encouraged by what we accomplished. It’s always nice to get a couple of solid runs in, even if we’re not exactly where we want to be.”

The weather and track conditions were optimal for both of Friday’s rounds. Temperatures never rose above 75 degrees and the humidity remained low, which is a perfect combination for the 1,300-horsepower, dual-carbureted Pro Stock cars. Local forecasts call for more of the same Saturday.

“Tomorrow should be a good day,” Coughlin said. “It’ll help to get a little more heat in the track and we should be able to get after it. The plan is to chip away at the data we gained during today’s two runs and see if we can’t get up there near the top of the qualifying sheet with the big hitters.”

Saturday’s two sessions are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
