This weekend, the Coughlin family will field once again participate in the Buckeye Fuel Wars North Central Division Lucas Oil Series event at their home track, National Trail Raceway as third-generation racer Troy Coughlin Jr. will race in Super Comp and Super Gas.
Troy Coughlin Jr. is currently ranked third in the national points standings in the Super Gas class. Troy has only participated in four of the five maximum allowably Lucas Oil Series events for which points are earned which means he could take over the lead no matter how many rounds he wins.
Troy Jr. is the Super Gas points leader in the North Central Division and is also ranked third in the Super Comp class with his JEGS.com dragster. In Super Comp, he trails leader Steve Hoyt by just 66 points.
Earlier this year, Troy Jr. won his first NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event when he drove his JEGS.com Corvette to the Super Gas win in Norwalk, Ohio.
The Coughlin family has won Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events in nine different classes, Top Fuel, Pro Comp, Super Eliminator, Comp, Super Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Top Dragster, and Top Sportsman.
The Coughlin’s have won Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events at 17 different tracks across North America including races in six of NHRA’s seven geographic divisions. They have not won in Division 6, the Pacific Northwest.
Family patriarch Jeg Coughlin Sr. won his first Lucas Oil Series event when he claimed the Super Eliminator title at Windsor Dragway in Windsor, Ontario in 1969.
Jeg Coughlin Sr., Jeg Coughlin Jr., and John Coughlin have each won four North Central Division season championships while Mike Coughlin has two for a total of 14.
Mike Coughlin has won four national event titles at National Trail Raceway. He won in Super Comp in 2002 and 2003 and recorded back-to-back wins in Top Sportsman in 2006 and 2007 at the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals.
The Coughlin family has claimed three Lucas Oil Series Divisional wins at National Trail Raceway. Mike won the Top Sportsman title in 2007, John won in Super Stock in 2002 and family patriarch Jeg Coughlin Sr. won the Pro Comp title in 1976.
In addition to their national and divisional event wins, the Coughlin’s have won three specialty events at National Trail Raceway. Jeg Jr. won the JEGS (Then TRW) Allstars race in 1991 and 1997 and John claimed a victory in the Top Dragster Shootout held during the 2007 JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals.
At the 2003 Columbus national event, the Coughlin family enjoyed one of their best events as they claimed a pair of victories. John won in Super Stock and Mike claimed the Super Comp title. The 1996 race was also memorable as Jeg Jr., scored a win in Super Stock and a runner-up finish in Super Gas.
All told, the Coughlin brothers, Troy, John, Mike and Jeg Jr., have combined to win 11 national events at National Trail Raceway, the team’s longtime home track. They have also tallied six runner-up finishes here.
