HOUSTON (March 26) — Pro Modified racer Troy Coughlin came to Texas early with the stated goal of improving his chances to win this weekend’s JEGS ProMod Challenge event at Houston Raceway Park. After two days of testing at a nearby facility under the same conditions they expect to encounter at HRP, Coughlin is confident his JEGS.com Pontiac GTO race team has met its objective.

“The car went straight and it was fast; that’s a great combination,” Coughlin said. “We had a little issue at the season opener in Gainesville where the car went left immediately when I dropped the clutch. With the entire event shortened by rain, it really put us behind and we just didn’t have the results we had hoped for.

“We were all anxious to fix the problem so we decided to drive down Monday and run this thing until everything was perfect. We certainly fixed the problem with the car going straight and we even found a couple more little things that could have become problems if left unchecked and fixed them also, so we’re very encouraged with what we can do.”

The JEGS ProMod Challenge is a 10-race series that takes place within the schedule of various NHRA national events around the country. It’s the highest profile form of Pro Modified racing in the country and the new season is off to a great start.

“It was an honor for JEGS to take over title sponsorship of this series and when the chance to put our name on it became available we jumped at it,” Coughlin said. “Our customers and our 350 associates are big into racing and everyone loves Pro Mod. It was really cool to race in front of 50,000 people in Gainesville and you know the Houston fans are going to come out in full force. This is definitely Pro Mod country.

“Once again, we’ve assembled 24 of the top Pro Mod racers in the country for this event and I’m confident we’ll put on another great show. A lot of the guys were running huge numbers in Florida and if it stays cool here, we should be just as fast. It’s going to be a great weekend.”

Coughlin, a 43-year-old from Delaware, Ohio, is one of just 28 racers who have won events in the NHRA Pro Mod class.
