SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (April 17) — Short-track legend Gary St. Amant wheeled his No. 7 JEGS.com/Speedco Chevrolet Monte Carlo to a fifth-place finish at the USAR (United Speed Alliance Racing) Hooters Pro Cup Series Farmer’s Foods 500 Saturday night at South Boston Speedway. The strong showing by the former two-time world champion slotted him third overall in the Northern Division championship points after one race.
St. Amant wasn’t one of the four drivers to lead the race as it unfolded but he did manage to hang around round near the top of the grid all evening. The race was interrupted by slight sprinkles on two occasions and there were nine other caution periods brought on by accidents, none of which included St. Amant.
“We were a little nervous coming in with some new guys on the team, but it was a great race for us,” St. Amant said. “Not only have some of the guys never been over the wall, but they’ve never been to a race with live pit stops. So for us to get out of here with a top-five finish is awesome.”
The Northern Division standings is led by Clay Rogers with 145 points. Matt Carter is second with 140 points, followed by St. Amant at 130 points.
Up next for the veteran racer is the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series event May 3 at Shenandoah Speedway in Shenandoah, Va.
