ATLANTA (April 25) — After a workmanlike weekend at the JEGS.com Cajun SPORTSnationals in Louisiana, Troy Coughlin is finally ready to race in the AMS Pro Mod Challenge. Coughlin missed the first two races of the 10-race series while sorting out a new car, but his recent outing at No Problem Raceway have him excited about this weekend’s national event near Atlanta.

“We did exactly what we set out to do in Louisiana,” Coughlin said. “We made it down the track every time except maybe once or twice when we were searching for the outer limits of what we could do. The main goal of figuring out the chassis and power ratio was accomplished and we even had time to peck away at the tune-up, so it was a big success.”

Of the numerous test runs Coughlin made, his best was a 6.41-second blast at 228 mph. Those numbers are slightly off the pace Coughlin will probably need to make the field in Atlanta, a fact not lost on the veteran racer.

“We were probably three-tenths of a second and five mph off what they’re running at NHRA racetracks but we intentionally slowed it down to get the chassis dialed in,” Coughlin said. “We started getting quicker right away when got a hold of the horsepower we’re making and applied it to the tune-up. Plus, since we left the test session, we’ve found a few more things we think will help.”

Despite his late start to his ’07 campaign, Coughlin is confident his turbo-charged JEGS.com Pontiac GTO can contend for the trophy this weekend at Atlanta Dragway.

“I’d like to open with a solid 6.2-second pass and work from there,” he said. “We certainly wouldn’t go to a race unless we thought we were capable of making the show. I know the effort this group has put in has been second-to-none and I’d sure like to see the guys have something to show for all of their hard work. It is very much appreciated.”
