JEG’S Mail Order
Troy Coughlin – ProMod
Pre Race Release
Pro Mod racer Troy Coughlin is fired-up about this weekend’s second annual Jegs.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSNationals at No Problem Raceway and he hasn’t even had a bite of alligator jambalaya or heard one note of zydeco music yet.
Coughlin, the driver of the 2004 AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge championship-winning 1967 Jeg’s Mail Order Ford Mustang, is excited about this race for an entirely different reason: Family bragging rights. “In all the years and all the different races me and my dad and my brothers have been in, no one has ever won a SPORTSNational,” Troy said. “You’d better believe we’d all like to take the first one.”
Three of the four Coughlin brothers will be racing this weekend. Mike will compete in Super Comp, John in Super Stock, and Troy in Pro Mod. With no Top Fuel dragsters or Funny Cars competing at this event, the Pro Mods will be the stars of the show, making Troy all the more anxious to strut his stuff.
“This is our fourth AMS race of the series, which is 14 races long, so it’s time to get off our tails and make some noise,” said Troy, who is a rookie in the Pro Mod class. “I have my teammate Mike Ashley’s champion car from last year so we know it’s capable of winning. We’ve just been fighting a little problem that’s been holding us down. But the boys worked late in Las Vegas and we found our gremlin. Now it’s time to rock.”
Troy tuned up his driving for this race by taking delivery of a new Rousch Racing Ford Mustang street car. “I went for a cruise [Thursday] just to feel it out,” he said. “It’s nice, but it’ll be better after we put a supercharger and exhaust package on there. Then we’ll be up around 500 horsepower.”
Pro Mod qualifying sessions will take place at 2 and 6 p.m. Friday and 3 and 6 p.m. Saturday. Eliminations begin at 11 a.m. Sunday.
“This will probably be the biggest race of the year for Pro Mods,” Troy said. “There are 40 or so cars coming and the field will be fast and quick. I can’t wait.”
