Troy Coughlin Jr. will once again pull double duty at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals racing in both the Super Comp and Super Gas categories with his JEGS.com dragster and Corvette roadster.
Troy Jr. is a three-time NHRA national event winner and the first third-generation Coughlin to win a major event. Troy Jr. won Super Comp titles at the 2009 Las Vegas race and the 2010 U.S. Nationals. He also won the Super Gas class at the 2013 Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla.
Troy Jr. is the reigning NHRA North Central Division Super Gas champion. He also finished third nationally; just 23-points behind world champion Rick Beckstrom.
Troy Jr. is currently ranked No. 4 in the NHRA Super Gas national points standings. Last weekend, Troy Jr. was a runner-up in Super Gas at the Division 3 Lucas Oil Series event in Bowling Green, Ky. His father, Troy, accomplished a similar feat in 1991 and then went on to win the U.S. Nationals the following weekend.
Thus far in 2014, Troy Jr. has reached the final round of four Lucas Oil Series races and has a victory at Cecil County Dragway in Rising Sun, Md. to go with his runner-up finishes in Reading, Joliet, and Bowling Green.
During his career, Troy Jr. has appeared in nine Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional final rounds and has claimed three victories.
In addition to his success in NHRA events, Troy Jr. is also regarded as one of the sport’s best E.T. bracket racers. He has accumulated several major victories including a $25,000 payday at the Atco Dragway Superbucks event and a $10,000 win the Spring Buck Blast at South Georgia Motorsports Park.
Collectively, the Coughlin family has won the U.S. Nationals eight times. Jeg Coughlin Jr. has four wins (three in Pro Stock and one in Super Gas). Troy, won the Super Gas title in 1991. Mike collected two wins in the Pro Stock Truck class in 1999 and 2001 and third generation racer Troy Coughlin Jr. won the Super Comp title in 2010. In addition, John Coughlin won the U.S. Nationals as a car owner in 2005 when Brad Plourd drove his JEGS Mail Order dragster to the Super Comp title.
JEGS family patriarch Jeg Coughlin Sr. drove to two U.S. Nationals finals during his career. He was runner-up in Little Eliminator in 1959 and runner-up in Pro Comp in 1975.
The Coughlin family, including John, Troy, Mike, Jeg Jr., and Troy Jr. has combined for 97 NHRA national event victories since 1990. The Coughlin’s have won in 9 different eliminators including Pro Stock, Pro Stock Truck, Pro Mod, Comp, Super Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Top Sportsman, and Top Dragster.
