JEG’S Mail Order
Troy Coughlin – ProMod
Saturday Summary
Troy Coughlin and his Jeg’s Mail Order Ford Mustang will enter Sunday as one of the favorites to win the AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge at the second annual Jegs.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals. Coughlin finished four rounds of qualifying in the top half of the field in fifth place with a best pass of 6.225 seconds at 225.94 mph, which he ran Friday evening.
Cooler weather that descended on No Problem Raceway overnight had most of the drivers and crew chiefs feeling greedy in Saturday’s final two time trials as teams looked for ways to improve on their previously posted elapsed times. Coughlin’s Gotham City crew was no different as he overpowered the racetrack on his last two attempts.
“We are trying to get this car to be a little faster,” Coughlin said. “We qualified so well yesterday that we knew we could try some things today and it wouldn’t affect our chances on Sunday. We spun the tires both times out trying to pick up our numbers but the guys tell me we did gain some data.
“The plan for tomorrow is to put the car right back the way it was Friday when we ran two 6.2-second passes and just go out there and race. We’re excited and ready to go.”
Coughlin will open against Canadian Glen Kerunsky, who qualified 12th with a 6.294 at 225.97 mph. As the No. 5 qualifier, Coughlin will have the advantage of lane choice when the two racers line up against one another for the first time ever.
“I feel comfortable and extremely confident in this racecar and in our abilities to be competitive,” Coughlin said. “I’m new in this class so I’m learning all of the other drivers but the reality is that it doesn’t matter who’s in the other lane. You have to be prepared to beat them all to win.
“It’s great that my teammate [Mike Ashley] is on the other side of the ladder because we don’t want to race each other early in the day if we can avoid it. If he does his job and I do mine, we might have a real fun race late tomorrow afternoon.”
Pro Mod eliminations begin at 11 a.m. Sunday.
