Pre Race Release
The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series will head west to the NHRA Mopar Mile High Nationals in Denver, CO this weekend. The event is held annually at Bandimere Speedway and is the first race that starts the famed “West Coast” swing.
Two weeks ago, Coughlin spent one full day testing at Bandimere Speedway to prepare for the upcoming event. The 10-year Pro Stock veteran made six-runs and is focused on starting off strong right out of the trailer when he returns to the track.
“Everyone really puts a lot of emphasis on the fact that we have three-races that are back-to-back that start this weekend,” explained Coughlin. “The reality of it is that we have four three-race stretches on the schedule this year. We have already finished two and have two more to go. The only real difference with the West Coast swing for me is that our team heads west and we are about as far away from our shop in Delaware, Ohio as it gets.”
Coughlin and his yellow and black Jeg’s Mail Order Chevy Cavalier will head to the mountain looking to have a strong performance and work at scoring a victory. The 40-year old second generation driver scored a runner-up finish in 1999 at Bandimere Speedway. He faced off against his younger brother Jeg that year, which was the second-time the two had faced off in a final round in Pro Stock. The first all-Jeg’s professional final round was in 1998 at the season opener at Pomona Raceway.
The elder of the Coughlin Pro Stock duo has qualified for the Denver event every year since 1995 except for 2002, when he did not compete. Coughlin withdrew from the event after he learned his mother-in-law passed away. His record in elimination rounds is 9-8 on the mountain. His best qualifying performance came in 1999, when he was fourth.
“Bandimere Speedway is a fun place to race at,” stated Coughlin. “The Bandimere family has a first class facility for the fans and the racers. Being pitted above the track gives all the teams a chance to catch a little bit more of the action the fans get to see. It’s also great for keeping an eye on the track conditions.”
