Coughlin was focused on improving and breaking into the quick-16 during the second qualifying session. The run was an improvement over his previous time. He laid down a run of 6.856 at 200.56 mph and slipped to the No. 19 spot.
“We are inching up on it,” stated Coughlin. “We hurt an engine in the middle of fifth gear. I heard some noise from ahead of me that just didn’t sound good. We got the engine out and on its way back to our shop. We replaced it with a fresh piece that was just finished this week. It was very close to what we had in the car, but we will see tomorrow (Saturday). We are going in the right direction with our set up and the car was responding pretty well to half-track. The morning session tomorrow will be even more important now.”
