BRISTOL, Tenn. (July 7) — Pro Mod racer Troy Coughlin will see Sunday action for the first time this season after winning his first round race against Doug Palmer Saturday night at Bristol Dragway. Coughlin ran a 6.439 at 230.53 mph to Palmer’s 6.614 at 222.25 mph to pull off the biggest upset of the opening round of eliminations.

“It’s very exciting,” Coughlin said. “It’s a neat little transition period for our twin-turbo set-up. We’ve still got a long way to go but we’re making strides and we’ve learned quite a bit here in Bristol. Bottom line, Team JEGS is going to the second round and we couldn’t be happier.

“Doug Palmer’s a good driver and I was surprised to see him get loose like that but we’ll take the win. Once I saw his nose drop back I knew we had the win because we don’t get passed on the back half of the track. We’re making great speed.”

Coughlin’s win over Palmer came with his best pass of the weekend. He had previously qualified 15th out of 16 racers with a 6.488 at 231.71 mph.

“We’re all making a lot of horsepower; everyone in the class is,” said Coughlin, the only racer in the class to run a twin-turbo racecar. “Where we need to improve is to get our numbers down low to match what we’re doing from mid-track on. If we can do that, we’ll be awesome. The motor’s staying together every run and that’s another big reason we’re ready to make some bigger steps forward.

“Even with the air being as slow as it is compared to the norm, we’re still seeing guys dig deep and find that extra something to put the big numbers on the scoreboard. If we want to continue racing we’re going to need to do the same thing. We’ve been making little steps forward and now I think we’re ready to take two or three steps at a time.”

Up next for Coughlin is No. 10 qualifier Scott Ray, who upset Tim Tindle with a 6.252 at 231.00 mph to Tindle’s retired 14.376 at 52.16 mph.
