AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge

NHRA Mac Tools US Nationals
Indianapolis Raceway Park
Indianapolis, IN
Sept. 3rd / Saturday Summary

Jeg Coughlin – JEG’S Mail Order / Mopar – Dodge Stratus RT (Pro Stock)
Troy Coughlin – JEG’S Mail Order / ’67 Ford Mustang (Pro Mod)

Troy Coughlin made a big move up in the AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge Saturday at Indianapolis Raceway Park, moving from out of contention to the top half of the field in his Jeg’s Mail Order Ford Mustang. Troy’s brother Jeg didn’t fare quite as well, failing to improve during Saturday’s two Pro Stock qualifying runs and dropping to 13th place overall.

The Pro Mod class was reduced to just one session after a crash knocked out IRP’s timing system for more than an hour. That didn’t seem to bother Troy as the Pro Mod rookie powered through a 6.181-second pass at 230.13 mph to earn the No. 7 position.

“You hate to lose a run for whatever reason but it really isn’t a big deal this time because we ran so well earlier in the day,” Troy said. “Chuck (Ford, the team’s crew chief) actually had her set up very conservatively because we had smoked the tires in Round 1 so we wanted to make absolutely sure we were gonna make it down the track and get some sort of time. It actually lost the belt at 1,100 feet so I know there’s more in there. I expect we would have had at least a 6.14 if that hadn’t happened.”

Both Coughlin boys will have two more chances to improve Sunday before the fields are officially set for Monday’s eliminations. No one is more happy about that than Jeg, who ran well below expectations Saturday. Jeg’s Dodge Stratus R/T was consistent, running a 6.79 and a 6.80, but both of those marks were well behind the 6.752 at 203.71 mph he posted Friday night.

“It’ll be a late night of work over here,” Jeg said. “We’re changing engines and hoping for much better results. The morning session should be good so we need to be prepared. We’re still investigating what was going on today. I have the utmost confidence in this crew that they’ll give me a good racecar. The main thing is we’re in the show. That’s always the first goal.”
