Jeg’s Mail Order, the title sponsor of the two SPORTSnationals super-events being held this year, has raised the stakes considerably by offering up a beautiful, hand-crafted Jeg’s Crown trophy to any racer who can win the same category at both events.

“Since we’re sponsoring both races and because sportsman racing is such a big part of the Coughlin family heritage, we collectively decided to do something special for the racers that is sure to add some additional excitement to both SPORTSnational events,” said Woody Woodruff, Jeg’s director of motorsports. “I think when we unveil these trophies this weekend on NHRA2day, people will really be impressed.”

The stars of the Lucas Oil Sportsman Drag Racing Series will take center stage this weekend at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, La., when the second annual Jegs.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals roars to life. The winners of each of the seven categories being contested ‑ Pro Mod, Competition Eliminator, Super Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, and Stock will then get a chance to score one of the sure-to-be-coveted Jeg’s Crown trophies July 28-31 during the Jeg’s Northern SPORTSnationals at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio.

“I designed these trophies so that the racers would look at them and say, ‘I’ve got to have that,'” said artist Dan Dreisbach, who was commissioned to design the Jeg’s Crown. “Jeg’s wanted something memorable and I think we have created a very special piece. It’s certainly different from the standard run-of-the-mill trophies you see.”

Dreisbach is the head fabricator at Rahal Racing, where he’s been twisting metal for 16 years. He creates special one-of-a-kind trophies in his spare time.

“We have a wall of trophies at the shop and some of them signify very special accomplishments,” Dreisbach said. “But the vast majority of them look the same and a lot of them simply fall apart if you grab them. The first thing I do is make a trophy that is virtually indestructible. Then I get with the presenters and get a feel of what they want.”

Each trophy took Driesbach approximately 20 hours to complete. They each feature a crown “cocked as if it were on someone’s head,” and the name of the winner. They are comprised mostly of brushed stainless steel, weigh 12 pounds, and stand two feet tall.

“They’re very special, and we can’t wait to give them out,” Woodruff said.
