GLENDORA, Calif. (March 24, 2006) – JEG’S Automotive, Inc. has named Dick Wells to serve as the Grand Marshal for the 3rd Annual Jegs.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals and Lynn Nickerson will be the Honorary Starter for the event April 21-23 at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, La.
Wells has served on the NHRA Board of Directors since 1979 and was the original editor of National DRAGSTER. In 1967 he left the publishing business and produced the first SEMA Show, held under the grandstands of Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Wells currently manages the Auto International Association for SEMA and under his guidance, the AIA grew to become a force in the import parts segment of the automotive aftermarket. He eventually took over the communications department of SEMA as well.
Nickerson is well-know to NHRA South Central division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors. After getting his start announcing at race tracks throughout the region, Nickerson has served as the division’s announcer for more than a decade.
“Dick Wells has always been a strong advocate for NHRA’s sportsman racers and was instrumental in getting the SPORTSnationals program reintroduced for them,” said Scott Woodruff, JEG’S director of media. “We thought it would be a great way to show our appreciation to him for all the effort he puts into NHRA drag racing.
“As for Lynn Nickerson, he has always been a friend to all racers and his love of drag racing is evident in his announcing,” continued Woodruff. “He is a cancer survivor and when racers and fans hear Lynn’s voice they can hear his enthusiasm both for life and for racing.”
There are three NHRA SPORTSnationals events scheduled in 2006. The races are designed to showcase NHRA’s sportsman categories exclusively. Competitors in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street will vie for more than $50,000 at each of the NHRA SPORTSnationals event this year. NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series national event points will be awarded to drivers in all categories except Super Street.
In addition, all three NHRA SPORTSnationals events will feature NHRA class eliminations, including a Super Stock Hemi Shootout.
The Top Sportsman class will run at the Jegs.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals and at the JEG’S NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals. The Pacific SPORTSnationals will feature the Super Eliminator and Top Comp classes.
JEG’S Automotive, Inc. is the title sponsor of two of the three events: The Jegs.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals in April and the JEG’S NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals July 2-29 at National Trail Raceway near Columbus, Ohio. The third event, the NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals, is scheduled Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway in Fontana, California.
